Since moving to the city I have rediscovered the joy of riding my bicycle. It took about two weeks for me to build up the courage to ride with traffic and then another week to build up even more courage to venture out at night with lights blazing! This Friday, May 15th, is Bike to Work Day. I work from home so I think I will bike around and see where everyone else is going and use the ride as an excuse to check out the four morning ‘Energizing Stations’ that the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is putting together. They have lots planned so check out their website!
#RideIndego is one of the sponsors of Bike to Work Day. I had the pleasure of being one of the volunteers who rode RideIndego on distribution day! After gathering at Eakins Oval, contingents of riders rode around the oval and then off to all corners of the city to deliver the new #PhillyBikeShare blue bikes to their designated stations. I rode to 9th and Locust – right next to the #PATCO station. What great bikes – equipped with baskets, lights, a bell and comfy seats, these three speeders let you zip down the road. Bring your own helmet and you are ready to go.
(Note, PATCO just installed bike racks in it’s city stations so if you want to be multi-modal and bike to the train you now have a safe place to park.)
RideIndego is great for commuting but it is also great for joy riding. One great ride starts at the art museum and follows Kelly Drive up to Falls Bridge and then back down to the museum along MLK. Fairmount Park is beautiful this spring. I rode the trail the other day and counted 31 goslings tottering after their parents – couldn’t have been cuter. Not up for such a long ride, check out the Schuylkill River Trail from the museum to the South Street Bridge. A very nice, calming ride along the water – it can get busy in the afternoon but still lots of great sights, sounds and scenery.
Philadelphia has lots of designated bike lanes that accommodate fast and slow (me) riders. Check out the map, plan your trip and you can almost avoid cars. I am having a great time getting to know Philadelphia from the road – fresh air, exercise and easy parking make it one of the best ways to get around the city. Give Friday’s Bike to Work Day a try – you may find a whole new way to commute.
