So, in my Energy Snooping post, I suggested that you do an inventory of your plug loads. Then I thought, hey wait a second, you haven’t done your own inventory. Sorry for that. Then I followed my own instructions: walked around with a pen, paper, and added a ladder. Then I wrote down everything that is plugged in. Boy was I embarrassed that I hadn’t done the inventory before and excited that I just found a significant savings opportunity.
On our 5 floors, we have of varying wattage: 15 Halogens, 46 Incandescents!!!!!, 11 LEDs, and 15 CFLs. We also have 6 powers strips for charging phones and other handheld devices and for places in the house that have multiple pieces of equipment including: the EnergyStar TV, VCR/DVD, cable modem, printer, EnergyStar MAC, EnergyStar laptop, and cable router.
To get a ballpark estimate of potential savings we calculated how much it would cost to burn every light in the house for one hour. That came to $0.50. If we changed out all of the halogen, incandescents and CFLs for equivalent wattage LEDs, the one hour burn costs came to $0.10. WOW! That is a huge savings opportunity.
Our utility company offers an excellent rebate for LEDs so I think that we will take advantage of it and change the offending bulbs on the first day of the next meter reading. That way we will get a cleaner reading for comparison and we can report back to you!
So now you should go do your own inventory and see how many of those pesky, energy hogging, incandescents are lurking quietly in your lamps. You may be as surprised as I was and have a great opportunity to save.
