Everywhere we look today someone is telling us about this new green thing or that way to be sustainable. It is almost overwhelming. Your family can develop a strategy for living a sustainable life by focusing on these eight areas:
- One: Educate yourself and your family about the problem and then set goals for reducing your impact on the earth.
- Two: Reduce Waste by being conscious of your actions. Every time you go to throw something in a landfill bound trashcan ask:
- Can I compost this instead?
- Is it recyclable?
- Can I donate this to a food bank or a clothing drive?
- Is it reusable?
- Three: Conserve Water
- Four: Buy smarter by keeping sustainability in mind
- Buying local supports your neighborhood economy and reduces transportation and carbon emissions.
- Buying recycled and recyclable products creates a demand for all the ‘raw materials’ you generate in your recycling bin
- Choose products packaged with recycled/ recyclable materials
- Five: Eat colorful, seasonal, locally grown and raised foods.
- Six: Conserve energy
- Seven: Improve your indoor air quality
- Eight: Doing home improvements? Make sustainable choices and decisions.
